Kripacharya was selected to teach both the Pandavas and the Kauravas the science of warfare. The students aquired the necessary skills after a few years and being from the Kshatriya race,Bhishma saw a need for the princes to aquire more skills.

Drona acharya who was the son of the sage Bharadwaja was selected to become the other teacher. Both Bhishma and Drona were disciples of the same guru,Parashurama.

Now Drona had a friend whose name was Drupada, prince of Panchala. They were close friends for many years.Drona eventually married the daughter of the sage Gautama and as fate would have it,he was poverty striken for some time.

When Drupada became King,Drona seeked his assistance and was ridiculed and chased away. Thus, their friendship ended but Drona wanted to crush Drupada's pride.

When he was appointed by Bhishma to teach the Pandavas and the Kauravas the art of archery,he was very happy indeed. For years he imparted his knowledge to them and was happy with their progress.

Arjuna was very ambitious and showed a great deal of interest in learning the various skills and became the favourite of Drona. Drona promised Arjuna that he will some day make him the greatest archer.
